Customer Initiates Payment: Customer inputs card or payment details (e.g., Visa, Apple Pay) on your site/app. API Sends Payment Request: The Payment API collects the data and sends it (encrypted) to the Payment Gateway. Gateway Communicates with Processor: The gateway passes info to the Payment Processor (e.g., First Data, Stripe, WorldPay). Processor Contacts Issuing Bank: The card’s issuing bank is contacted to check: Validity Sufficient funds Fraud detection Approval or Decline Returned: If approved, a transaction ID is sent back. If declined, a code is returned explaining the issue. Settlement: Funds are eventually transferred (typically in 1–2 business days) from the customer’s account to the merchant’s merchant account or bank account.
